Chapter Twenty-Three

I wake up to excruciating pain all over my body. When my eyes snap open, I discover I’m not in my room at the dorm but in a strange one. The white walls are bare, not even a clock. It smells like…guy.

Everything comes crashing down on me. The party last night. Being pelted by tomatoes and then rocks and stones. Getting saved by Declan and Colt. The two of them and Ethan cleaning my wounds.

Raising my head a little, I search the room, which is so spotless it almost looks like it’s not even in use. Like it belongs in an ad in some rich magazine. That’s when I spy Declan half-lying on a chair near his desk and Ethan sprawled out on the floor.

I understand why Declan’s here—this is his room—but Ethan spent the night here, too?

When I try to sit up, my body explodes in such intense pain that I cry out and flop back down. Both Declan and Ethan’s heads jerk up, and when they find me awake, they bolt to their feet and hurry over. Declan stands a few feet behind Ethan, though, like he’s a little scared to approach an injured animal.

Dropping to his knees, Ethan stretches a hesitant hand to my face, like he wants to stroke my cheek or something. But his hand changes course and gently brushes across the massive cut on my shoulder. “You feeling okay?”

I give him a small smile. “What do you think?”

“I’ll text Colt to bring over some pain pills.” He taps on his phone.

My eyes take a peek at Declan. He still stands behind Ethan, arms folded over his chest, as still as a statue. I don’t see any sign of the emotions I saw last night in his eyes. No, he’s got his usual cold, hard face on this morning.

“Sorry I stole your bed,” I say, trying to sit up again. “I’ll just—ow!” I flop back down.

Ethan raises himself a drop on his knees and gently pushes me down. “Don’t move. I don’t want any of your wounds to open. Is it okay if I look at them?”

I nod.

He removes the tape on the one on my shoulders and carefully pries it off, bending closer to examine it carefully. “Looks good. No infection.” He proceeds to check the other ones.

I steal another glance at Declan. He hasn’t changed his stance. His eyes follow Ethan’s movements.

“All good,” Ethan announces. “I’ll just change the dressing.”

“Thanks, by the way,” I say. My eyes slide over to Declan. “And thanks for saving me last night. I guess you beat me two to one,” I joke.

But he doesn’t laugh, just watches me with those emotionless eyes.

Someone knocks on the door. Declan opens it and invites Colt in. “Brought the drugs,” Colt says. “How’s our patient doing this morning?” He moves closer and whistles. “Tell me it looks worse than it feels.”

I force another small smile. “I wish.”

He marches over with the pills and a bottle of water. Together, he and Ethan help me sit up.
